The Sacred and the Ordinary
January 13
Read: MARK 1:4-11
As a hospice chaplain, I know that the moments I have with our patients and their families can be holy experiences. The messiness of life and our aging bodies can feel so commonplace, dare I say awkward, to talk about. Yet as I place myself in real and common spaces, I find God working. I walk into people’s homes and rooms not knowing what my time with them will look like. Sometimes we have conversations, and sometimes we sit in silence. Sometimes laughter occurs and sometimes tears flow. Every visit I make is a chance to join God in the work God is doing.
In John’s obedience through the act of baptizing Jesus, God is made known. Will we have the courage to faithfully respond like John? Let us do the simple things Jesus requests of us as vessels to demonstrate the kingdom of God here on earth.
God, thank you for providing holy moments. May I faithfully join you in the work of your kingdom. AMEN.
