A New Plan

A New Plan

January 7

Read: EPHESIANS 1:3-14

“God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” Long ago I thought that meant God wanted me to have a perfect marriage, family, career, friends, etc. Then I spent my ministry sharing hurts, hopes, love, losses, joy, suffering, faith, and despair with good people who wanted to believe that, too, but found their lives often difficult, conflicted, painful, and confusing.

God does have a wonderful plan for your life, but not necessarily the one we were planning on. Ephesians 1 echoes Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord… plans to give you a future and a hope” (29:11). With words like blessed, chosen, adopted, redeemed, and destined, Paul describes God’s plan: living as blessed and beloved people in the freedom of forgiveness, chosen for his purpose, and empowered by his Spirit to share in the world-renewing work of Christ’s kingdom—and then to be part of that eternal kingdom when Christ’s purpose is fulfilled.

Lord, make your Covenant new in my life, and use me for your purpose for your people. AMEN.
