Jesus Is Greater
January 1
Read: HEBREWS 1:1-12
I’ve grown uncomfortable with the level of fandom that some famous Christians receive—the way we sometimes quote passages and spend hours in passionate conversation about a pastor’s latest book. How we post lengthy tributes on social media upon the death of a famous theologian. Having another believer influence your faith for the better is not bad, but the fandom trend makes me wonder: have we become more passionate disciples of our pastors and theologians than of Jesus Christ?
This is an age-old problem. It is why the apostle Paul reminded the Corinthians that he and Apollos were simply “servants through whom you came to believe” (1 Corinthians 3:5). It is why the writer of Hebrews proclaims that Jesus is greater than the angels. We must always remember that while creation is indeed “very good” (Genesis 1:31), nothing—and no one—is greater than Jesus.
Lord, we rejoice in this new year. With the angels and all the saints, we worship you. We proclaim that Jesus is greater than all, the exact imprint of God’s very being. AMEN.
