Filled to Bless

Filled to Bless

December 22

Read: LUKE 1:39-45

There’s been six months of silence between Zechariah and Elizabeth. And then, out of the blue, Elizabeth’s cousin Mary comes for a visit. When I first read this story, I wondered how Elizabeth knew to call the baby growing in Mary “my Lord.” How did she feel when Mary greeted her and her own baby leaped in her womb? By now, Elizabeth’s bump was a visible reminder of God’s miracle growing. But how did she know who Mary’s baby would become?

As I look closer, I notice that Elizabeth is “filled with the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit fills us with joy and wonder, helping us to recognize who is Lord. And it doesn’t stop with internal transformation; that Spirit-filled metamorphosis overflows, blessing those around us!

O Master, forgive us for not seeing you. Fill us anew with your Holy Spirit so we can recognize you and bless one another. AMEN.

About the Author

Alice Lee | Arriving at the “gold mountain” at seven years old as a “stranger and alien” and taking ESL in my adopted homeland, I found my home and true inheritance when I entered into the eternal life relationship with Jesus (John 17:3) at the age of thirteen and gave my life to him. I had the privilege of being the first in my family to finish college, earning a BA in psychology. Then I went on to receive a master’s degree in Christian education from Dallas Theological Seminary. I am immensely blessed to partner in life and ministry with my husband, Ed, for the past thirty-six years. Together with our children (Matthew, Melissa, and Anthony Emerson) we serve at Mosaic—an intentionally diverse church— in Sugar Land, Texas, so that we the church reflect the one triune God and his heart for all people. When free, I’m learning to be nana to our granddaughter, Zoe Grace, or growing our garden.
