Receive Well, Give Well

Receive Well, Give Well

December 18

Read: 1 THESSALONIANS 5:12-15

I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying “It is better to give than to receive.” But my friend and mentor Dale Vallejo-Sanderson challenges this idea by saying: “When you receive well, you give well.” We see this wisdom at work throughout Scripture, such as when the Lord tells Abram that he’s going to bless him so that he can bless to others. Receiving well is just as important as giving well, especially when we recognize that everything we have comes from God.

This is why it’s so important to acknowledge those who work among us, as today’s passage reminds us. My very first pastor was the late Reverend Alton Peterson, a loving, generous, humble, and gentle pastor who gave well because he knew how to receive well. He was present at my ordination service, and I am a part of Alton’s legacy because he received God’s love well and gave God’s love well. Who is teaching you to receive well and give well?

Lord, thank you for blessing me with godly leaders in my life. AMEN.
