Beliefs Versus Actions
Read: MATTHEW 25:31-46
Jesus’s words beckon us to join God’s mission in its rawest form: to help those in need. In the West, we are often uncomfortable with suffering, so we either deny it or seek to blame the victim. But God has created us differently than all other living things in that we have compassion. In this way, more than any other, we are made in God’s image.
Once Jesus makes his home in our hearts, his presence will not let us look away from suffering. We grieve the Spirit of God when we see great need and do nothing.
Matthew reminds us that in the end, all of us will appear before God to give an account not of our beliefs, but of our actions in this life.
Gracious Father, I thank you that you want to use me to help those in need. Help me to see the needs around me and respond generously as you lead me. Forgive me for the times I have heard your voice and grieved your Spirit by doing nothing. AMEN.
