We See God There
Read: PSALM 123
There is a special relationship between God and people who suffer. I don’t say this to downplay the pain of suffering or to glorify people who are begging for mercy, but Scripture makes clear that suffering produces a dependence on God. My favorite psalm is Psalm 34, especially verses 6 and 18: “This poor soul cried, and was heard by the LORD….The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.”
In our psalm today, the petitioner is in a position of obvious dependence. The community is at the end of their rope. They’ve had more than enough contempt, their souls filled with the scorn of others. No one ever hopes for suffering. Yet over and over, we are promised that this is when God is most present to us. Where is God showing up in the places where you are begging for mercy?
Lord, please be near to the brokenhearted. Give us the ability to sense your mercy there. AMEN.
