Read: MATTHEW 22:34-46
“On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (v. 40). Jesus faced opposition throughout his entire ministry, most often from religious leaders. I like to imagine that Jesus welcomed some of these difficult moments because he used them as opportunities to teach.
In today’s passage, a Pharisee seeks to test Jesus by asking him which commandment is the greatest. And Jesus turns this into a teaching moment; we learn that the greatest commandment is three things in one: loving God, loving our neighbors, and loving ourselves.
Of course, we must study the Bible to get to know God. But we are also called to look up and to look out, loving our neighbors as ourselves. Scripture teaches us how to live in the world, and our life in the world teaches us how to approach Scripture.
Father, help us to follow your commandments, loving you, loving our neighbors, and loving ourselves. In Jesus’s name, AMEN.
