Giving to God

Giving to God

November 10

Read: MATTHEW 22:15-22

“Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (v. 21).

In today’s passage, we see religious leaders trying to trap Jesus by challenging his integrity and wisdom by asking him a trick question about paying taxes. But Jesus turns the tables on the Pharisees, responding that we are called to give the emperor what he is due and to give God what God is due.

These words from Jesus remind us that we are both citizens of God’s kingdom and citizens of the world. This isn’t an easy message; it’s so much easier to choose one over the other, either rejecting the world or rejecting God. What might it look like to live into this tension?

Dear Lord, we pray that we might reflect your glory in these challenging days, giving our lives to you. In Jesus’s name, AMEN.
