True Mercy Is Just Mercy
Read: EZEKIEL 18:1-4, 25-32
How many times have you heard someone say, “That’s not fair, God!” How many times have you said this yourself?
It’s one thing to lament the unfairness of life, but the Israelites took this a step further by accusing God of behaving unjustly. That isn’t even in God’s DNA! Because God is merciful, God allowed this to go on for a while before finally responding. Then God addressed the attacks on God’s character through the prophet Ezekiel. Instead of innocents being punished for someone else’s sin, God says, “It is only the person who sins that shall die” (v. 4). This is justice meted out by a just God. Furthermore, if “the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed” (v. 27), God would show them mercy. How could the Israelites call this unfair?
But before being too quick to accuse them, we have to be honest. When have we exhibited similar behavior?
Merciful and just God, help us to desire your mercy and justice for all who need it. AMEN.
