True Mercy Comes from God

True Mercy Comes from God

October 11

Read: EXODUS 32:1-14

“Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever’” (v. 13).

Old Testament accounts of the Israelites often remind me how far I am from truly being like God. Take today’s passage, for example. After overcoming many obstacles, Moses has finally led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. They are now on their way to the Promised Land, so you’d think they’d be at least a little appreciative. No. Instead, when Moses’ mountaintop meeting with God takes too long, the people quickly forget God and turn to idols. God wants to wipe them out and start from scratch. Instead of agreeing, Moses intercedes on their behalf. And in an act of great mercy, “the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people” (v. 14).

Lord, thank you for those who intercede on our behalf for mercy. Help us to go and do likewise. AMEN.
