True Obedience

True Obedience

October 10

Read: PHILIPPIANS 3:4b-14

Author Daniel Hill writes in his book White Awake: “When we allow our sense of belonging to be shaped by the in/out, us/them binary of good and bad, we fall into what entrapped the Pharisee. We exert inordinate amounts of energy trying to prove that we belong in the good group (with earning, achieving, and validating as ways of proving it). We also can’t help but look down on those that are in the other group with judgment and at times even disdain.”

In this passage the Apostle Paul reminds us that all our ways of determining who’s in and who’s out are worthless. The only decision, the only possession, the only obedience that matters is faith in Christ. When we have faith in Christ and the power that raised him from the dead, we are made whole and receive the gift of eternal life.

Holy and loving God, thank you for making a way when there was no way, through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. AMEN.

About the Author

Mike Hotz /// I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where I serve as pastor of community life at First Covenant Church of Saint Paul. I am also a spiritual director seeking to help others to more deeply experience God in their lives. In addition to serving God, what I love most in life is my family, bicycling, and photography. My idea of a perfect day would start with some form of physical activity outdoors and finish with friends and family engaged in conversation around a meal.
