Come a Little Closer

Come a Little Closer

October 9

Read: MATTHEW 19:23-30

We love to compare, don’t we? We begin to create hierarchies based upon our “blessings.” Surely physical possessions and monetary value are signs of God’s blessings, right? Sometimes we begin to ascribe our own importance and greatness to our possessions.

Yesterday we encountered a wealthy young man who wanted to know with certainty what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. What he heard was greatly disappointing to him, and he walked away sad because his idea of his own greatness was at stake.

The lesson seems to be lost on Peter and the other disciples because they are dismayed. “Then who can be saved?” they ask. In response, Jesus draws them in. He looks at them intently and says, “For God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

The key is the disciples’ willingness to follow. The cost of following Jesus is high, but with God everything is possible. Come a little closer. Nothing is impossible.

Jesus, your invitations are sometimes confusing. Help us in our confusion to follow you. AMEN.

Mike Hotz /// I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where I serve as pastor of community life at First Covenant Church of Saint Paul. I am also a spiritual director seeking to help others to more deeply experience God in their lives. In addition to serving God, what I love most in life is my family, bicycling, and photography. My idea of a perfect day would start with some form of physical activity outdoors and finish with friends and family engaged in conversation around a meal.
