Taking God’s Pathway
Read: MATTHEW 16:21-28
“And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you’” (v. 22).
Peter, the Rock, had suddenly become a stumbling block as he held on to the expectation that God’s Davidic Messiah would triumph over Israel’s political enemies. Suffering and death did not seem a good strategy to Peter in furthering the coming of God’s kingdom. How often have we rationalized a different pathway over God’s leading in order to avoid some form of suffering?
How often have we missed opportunities to further God’s kingdom by failing to sacrificially offer our time, talents, treasures, testimonies, and even our bodies when directed by God? This week we have been challenged by God’s word to live holy lives characterized by self-denial. Do we?
Holy God, empower us by your Spirit to be what we claim when we call ourselves Christians—little Christs—living today as part of the body of Christ, living sacrifices of self-denial so that your kingdom will come on earth as it is in heaven. AMEN.
