Bow Down

Bow Down

August 29

Read: PSALM 138

I’m not sure we do a lot of bowing down these days. Too many of us are stiff-necked people who claim to have all the answers. So I was truly moved a few years ago to be in worship with women who were singing on their knees.

I had traveled to Tanzania with about twelve other Christians to do mission work. We met at a church with a metal roof, and after the opening session, the men and women were separated and the women remained in the sanctuary. I can still hear their voices, clear and harmonious, some of the most beautiful singing I have ever heard. Then they got down on their knees, and I thought the roof was going to come off of the building.

The psalmist writes of giving thanks and bowing down. I give thanks for the bowing down on that day.

Lord, thank you for times of worship when we remember that our place before you is on our knees. In the matchless name of Jesus, AMEN.
