The Surprising, Invisible, Growing Kingdom
Read: MATTHEW 13:31-33
Violence and disease spreading across the globe. Declining church attendance across Europe and the United States. Materialism, sexual promiscuity, and injustice. It is easy to think that God is absent. But Jesus uses pictures like this one of a mustard seed to describe what God’s kingdom looks like. God’s kingdom is the place where we experience God’s good and gracious rule.
Jesus paints a picture of a tiny seed that surprises anyone who is paying attention when it grows into a tree. Jesus explains that the kingdom of God is often invisible, that it is growing in unexpected places, and that it will ultimately be a visible blessing to many.
We can see God’s kingdom in our own lives and in our world when we look for the signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22).
Lord, help me to see the surprising, hidden, growing reminders of your kingdom work today. AMEN.
