Joyous Mutuality
July 22
Read: ROMANS 8:12-17
Today’s Scripture passage highlights God as Trinity. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each referred to in a joyous, co-inhering mutuality. The Spirit of God bears witness that we are children of God, and stirs us to enjoy God as our loving parent. Within this intimate relationship, we are promised a spiritual heredity—a sort of family resemblance to Jesus Christ.
The relational quality of God is the core of relational health in humankind. The Spirit of God undoes the spirit of fear. Because of Christ’s atonement, the force of alienation is broken at its base. Reconciliation with God makes reconciliation with one another thinkable. The Trinity reveals and creates the wholeness we are called to.
To claim faith as one’s own is to cry, “Abba! Father!” through Christ and in conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit.
Open my heart to you, O God, and set me free from fear. Assure me that I belong to you, and embolden me to be reconciled with the people in my life. AMEN.
