Devaluing One’s Birthright

Devaluing One’s Birthright

July 15

Read: GENESIS 25:19-34

Isaac prays in faith for children and God blesses him and Rebekah with twins. Here are two very special children born because of prayer and a promise, yet neither one behaves honorably. Jacob did not have to ask for what he did and Esau did not have to view what he had with so little esteem.

This story makes me reflect on all that we gain when we are born anew in Christ. We become children of God, joint heirs of eternal life and spiritual gifts. Will there ever come a time when we will be lured by someone to give up our birthright and all that we have gained from Christ for a momentary and temporal gain to satisfy our hunger? Would we remain faithful to Christ if we were in a situation where it was unsafe and dangerous to do so? Even at the cost of our freedom or our lives?

Lord Jesus, help us to cherish our inheritance in you and never trade it for any earthly gain. AMEN.
