The Heart behind the Rule

The Heart behind the Rule

July 3

Read: MATTHEW 12:9-14

For a rule-follower like me, today’s passage is eye-opening. Jesus teaches the church leaders of his day that they have misunderstood a rule. He reveals the heart behind the rule through good action.

This passage calls me to repent of my legalistic ways over and over again.

My early twenties come to mind as a time when I held a very blackand-white view of the world. On many occasions, I would find myself weighed down by indignation at other believers’ life choices because they did not align with my expectations for how a Christian “should behave.” Most of the time, I missed the point. And, often, I missed opportunities to extend compassion that could lead to healing, such as simply sitting with someone and listening to their life story.

Gracious Teacher, give us opportunities to exercise your grace, to value goodness, to live it out in word and deed. AMEN.
