First Love

First Love

Wednesday, June 24

Read: MATTHEW 10:34-39

How do we reconcile this passage with Jesus as the Prince of Peace? At first glance, these declarations seem to be in tension with what we know about Jesus. He is without question the Prince of Peace, but the peace he brings one believing family member (daughter) may be the source of division for a nonbelieving family member (mother). This unfortunate dynamic brings into stark relief the difference between being a Christ follower and not being one.

Becoming a member of God’s family carries with it an eternal weight that earthly relationships do not. We are called to love one another, yet this love must not exceed our love and commitment to Christ. There is an emotional suffering that can accompany the separation that occurs when the people we are in love with choose not to love the One who first loved us.

Who or what is your first love?

Lord, let my love for others only be surpassed by my love for you. AMEN.
