Never Alone!

Never Alone!

Thursday, May 21  |  Ascension

Read: Acts 1:1-11

We learn early in childhood to trust that when a caregiver leaves the room, he or she continues to exist. We hold on to mental images of the caregiver and retain a sense of security.

Before the day of Ascension, Jesus appears to his disciples for forty days before returning to the One who sent him. However, before leaving the disciples, Jesus promises, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (v. 8, RSV). How difficult it must have been for the disciples to watch as Jesus ascended and disappeared from their sight! But then God, who hid the Son from their sight, is revealed through the words of messenger angels—Jesus will return in the same manner in which he has left. On the day of Pentecost, God appears again through the power of the Holy Spirit.

With the indwelling of God’s Spirit, believers are never alone. Thanks be to God!

Thank you, Lord, for the presence of your Holy Spirit! Amen.
