A Gift

Friday, May 15

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13, NIV).

Have you ever said “yes” to something and then walked away and thought: “What did I do? Why did I agree to this sacrifice?” Guilty! Too many times I have said yes to opportunities because of my internal pressure to make people happy. Can you imagine how Jesus’s life story would have looked if he said yes to everyone?

We are reminded by Jesus himself that he chose sacrifice because of this important factor: “No one takes it from me, I lay it down of my own accord” (v. 18, NIV).

What are you doing this week that is a sacrifice in caring for others? How can you be sure to give freely of your own choice? A sacrifice that is given, not coerced, is the greatest act of love.

Jesus, help me to give with my whole heart and not because of a sense of obligation. Amen.
