Holy Suffering

Holy Suffering

Friday, April 24

A few years ago it struck me how often Jesus uses the imagery of childbirth. As the father of four, I appreciate the image. I have been with my wife as she has given birth to each of our children. I have seen her endure pain and suffering for hours (our last three children were all in the ten- and eleven-pound range). But I have also seen how quickly that suffering passes and turns to joy when my wife first holds our new child. The pains of labor are measured in hours; a full life is measured in decades.

So it will be with us, Jesus promises. The suffering we endure in this world will give way to new life. This new life is so abundant that it even works backward to recolor our pain as a holy experience. Our grief turns to joy. We can rest in this, for Jesus has overcome the world.

Lord Jesus, make your joy known to me today. AMEN.
