Obituary: Carl J. King

SPOKANE, WA (September 3, 2015) — Retired Covenant pastor Carl Joseph King, 86, died Wednesday.

He was born on December 29, 1929, to Walter and Anna King in Green City, Missouri.

Carl and Frances KingOrphaned at a young age, Carl was raised by his mother’s parents on their farm. In his youth he worked various jobs as a grocery delivery boy, meat cutter’s assistant, soda jerk, bowling pin setter, and dry cleaner’s assistant.

Carl married Frances Helen Johnson on September 19, 1953.

He graduated with a bachelor of education degree in 1955 from Seattle Pacific University, a bachelor of divinity from North Park Seminary in 1957, and a master of religious education from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1966.

He served as pastor at Bellingham Covenant in Bellingham, Washington; Douglas Park Covenant in Chicago, Illinois; First Covenant Church in Spokane, Washington; College Center Covenant in San Diego, California; Campus Way Covenant in Federal Way, Washington; and Selah Covenant Church in Selah, Washington. He also served on the North Pacific Conference Board.

He retired in 1995 after 41 years of pastoral ministry.

In addition to Frances, survivors include two daughters, Barbara Safranek and Marlys Nunez.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, at the Rockwood Retirement Community in Spokane, Washington.
